Researchers Notes

Starr Family Origins

Recorded as Starr, Starre, Sterre, Sturre, and the patronymics Starrs, this is an ancient English surname. It derives from the Olde English pre 7th century word "steorra", and means a star. The word was often used as a nickname in the transferred sense of a patch of white hair on the forehead of a horse, and hence was given to a man with a streak of white hair. In some instances, the surname may also originate from a house or inn, distinguished by the sign of a star in the days before numbers. Finally, the surname may have developed from "Sterre", again meaning star, but used as a personal name, and recorded in the famous Domesday Book of 1086.[1]

A coat of arms associated with the surname has the blazon of a blue shield, charged with a pair of gold scales, within an orle of eight gold estoiles.

Early Starr Ancestors

The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Leuenot Sterre. This was dated 1086, in the Domesday Book of Derbyshire, during the reign of King William 1st, known as "The Conqueror", 1066 - 1087. Domesday Entry for Sterre

Willelmus Stere was registered as a shipman in York, Yorkshire in 1376/1377.[2]

Nicholas Steur of Somerset did in 1417 and his will was recorded. [3]

Ricardus Stere of Thuren registered as a freeman in York, Yorkshire in 1432.[4]

Thomas Ster was the executor of the will of William Tempam which was proved 8 Feb 1491/2. His wife is listed as Joan Tempam on the transcript.[5]

"William Tepam of Capel, husbandman 25 Nov 1489 [Eng?ish] (to be buried in the churchyard; to mother church 6d; to high altar 4d; a cow to help maintain the lamp before the image of Our Lady in the church, 4d being paid yearly) to my godchildren 4d each; friend Thomas Ster (1s) and wife Joan Tepam, execs."

Henry Sture of North Huish in Devon died about 1519 when his will was probated. The transcript included an "Inquisition Post Mortem; Henry, son & heir".[6]

John Star of Edenbridge, Kent died about 1517 when his will was probated on 13 Oct 1517 in Rochester Consistory Court in Kent. [7]

In the village of Beer in East Devon is the Starr House. "This house was built in the 16th century by William Starre who came from Bradfield in Devon and was believed to be a textile manufacturer. No descendants of John and Dorothy Starre who died in the Great Plague of 1646 A.D. remained in the village of Beer. A memorial plaque in the Church records the John Starre who died in 1646 as the fifth son of William Starre.[8][9]

"The manor of Beer, from William the Conqueror's time downward, appears to have belonged to that large medieval landowner the Church, at the time of the dissolution of religious houses... Henry VIII gave it to his queen Katherine Parr, and years later the Manor was possessed by the Hassard family of Lyme Regis. They sold it to John Starre of Beer." The manor was after sold and passed to the hands of John's son William and his son John.[9]

"At Seaton the family burial-place...is the pleasant allusive epitaph, with emblems, to John Starre: - "etiam hic sepultus, 1633, - conjugalis amoris ergo posuit Elizabeth Starre."[9]

I would like to join this project. I am currently adding the Starr line for Connecticut to Ancestry based on the book "A History of the Starr Family of New England: from the ancestor Dr. Comfort Starr, of Ashford, County of Kent, England". I had two Starr family members but was not having any luck working from the bottom up so started working from the top down. From the book, I started with Thomas Starr [STARR-40]. It looks like this is being worked on for the Puritan Great Migration Project Wikitree also. Did find one link up - still working to find the second. There was a cross over between the Starr line from Connecticut and the one from Pennsylvania. I have worked backwards from Georgia Ann Starr 1808-1833 on the Pennsylvania side to John Carran Starr [STARR-414] . I am using "Immigration of the Irish Quakers into Pennsylvania, 1682-1750 and U.S. Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935 for the Pennsylvania side. I am also using North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000 for both Connecticut and Pennsylvania as well as state birth, baptism, marriage and death records. Would be glad to help as I can.

My husband's mother is descended from the Starr family of Chester County, PA, and then branched off to Lycoming County, PA.

I think that I just found the 5 Starr sons of William Starr of Beer. I was able to get onto the Devon Historical archives and did some digging around. It seems that William Starr had a brother by the name of Edmund Starr also. But William sons names where: John Starr, Edmond Starr, Rychard Starr, Wilmotte Starr and Robert Starr,... Or Starre as some of the spelling look... Then from there the list goes on to add a Humfry Starr 1619, Tristram Starr 1619, (Court records) and a Joseph Starr 1608 of (Yeovil)... So if anybody else can see what they come up with, please let me know. I'll keep following this but, it's kind of hard being over here and the records over in England... Thanks

I would like to join the Starr project. My 2nd Great Grandmother was Mary Eliza Starr of Indiana 3 Sep 1835 to 30 Jun 1913. Her father was Levi J Starr and his father Jeremiah Starr 1776-1852 in Penn.

Take care. William T. Diamond

Hi William,

Welcome to the Starr family project! It look like we both share Moses Starr (b. 1720) as a g+ great grandfather. I descend from Jeremiah's brother James.

Hello everyone, I am one of the Starr's who is in Delaware. I have been tracing the Family name for the past year and it has been leading me all over the place. I didn't know that we where so huge. Growing up in Delaware there was only my family in the phonebook when I was a little kid, and now there is a lot of other Starr's in there. That's what drew me to start looking this all up. And it is amazing how many Starr's have been very affluential around the world. There is a county named after us in Texas and places in other states.. pretty cool...

Hi Alan,

Welcome to the Starr project! I descend from the Quaker Irish Starrs (James Starr) that came to PA and some of my ancestors moved from Chester Co. PA to Delaware before migrating west to Virginia and onward. My Starr ancestor migrated to Oregon by wagon train and had a very large family. There were so many Starrs from Benton County, Oregon that many jokes were made about it. Glad to have you here.

Hi Caryl

I’m so excited to find this group. I am descended from Thomas Starr (Starr-1867), born about 1785 in Hollington, Sussex, England. He came to New South Wales, Australia, as a Bounty Immigrant in 1841. I would love to connect our branch to the Starr tree, but must confess that I currently have precious little time to devote to my genealogy passion, so would class myself as a dabbler only. Do you have suggestions on how I can support the Starr project in a small way, in drive and drabs?

Cheers J

Hi J!

I am glad you found this study. Like you, I have limited time to devote to my passion, but do the best I can. Adding the "Starr Name Study" sticker would be a big help in getting these ancestors identified. If you find any sources to share you can post them to the study. Thanks again for reaching out.

Welcome to the Starr Project Cassandra. Feel free to edit and add to the information. You can add the { { One Name Study|name=Starr } } sticker to your Starr ancestors and the category is [ [ Category: Starr Name Study ] ]. (remove the extra spaces when you paste)

I think that your ancestor is the "Massachusetts" line of the Starr family. Mine is the "Pennsylvania" Irish Quaker Starrs. I have not created a free space page that for the Massachusetts line. You are welcome to do so if you would like.

I would love to join this project. My mother and great-aunt have researched this line back to the 1591 birth of John Starr in Yarcombe, Devon, England. From what I gather he died in 1646 due to the Great Plague and was the father of Capt. John Carran Starr.

My grandmother was born Sherry Mae Starr 23 Aug 1936 in Joplin, Jasper, Missouri.
